Maintenance of quartz watches
A quartz watch is known for its reliability and accuracy. However, "battery-powered" doesn't mean a quartz movement is maintenance-free. These watches also contain delicate mechanical and electronic components that need to be checked, cleaned, or repaired over time. At Juwelier Van de Heyning in Oud-Turnhout, this is done in their own workshop.
What is a quartz watch?
A quartz watch is powered by a battery that vibrates a quartz crystal. These vibrations are converted via an electronic circuit into an extremely precise time display, usually one tick per second. Thanks to this technology, quartz watches run extremely accurately and are exceptionally user-friendly. However, behind this simplicity lies a sophisticated interplay of mechanical and electronic components. That's precisely why professional maintenance is essential.
Which parts require maintenance in a quartz clock?
When maintaining a quartz watch, we focus primarily on four crucial components.
The hand adjustment mechanism allows you to set the time and date correctly. Wear, dust, or a damaged spring can cause the crown to feel loose or prevent the hands from moving smoothly.
The mechanism consists of fine gears that divide seconds, minutes, and hours. Tiny dust particles can cause resistance here, resulting in shutdowns or increased battery consumption.
The coil is an extremely sensitive electrical component. An incorrect battery change or careless handling can damage it. In that case, the watch will stop running completely.
The circuitry acts as the brain of the watch. As a watch ages, the circuitry can consume more power. If you notice your battery lasting less than a year, this is often the cause.
Why does a quartz watch stop?
A dead battery is, of course, the most common cause, but certainly not the only one. In our workshop in Oud-Turnhout, we often see that stoppages are caused by contamination, wear, or an incorrect battery change in the past. Additional functions like the date, chronograph, or multi-functions also increase the load on the movement and require more maintenance.
What exactly does quartz watch maintenance entail?
During a service, the watch movement is carefully opened and thoroughly inspected. We clean the internals, check the functioning of all components, replace worn components or the entire mechanism if necessary, and always install a correct quality battery. Everything is done using professional watchmaking tools.
