Overhaul of a vintage Edox Delfin AS1950

A watch recently arrived at our workshop in Oud-Turnhout: an Edox Delfin with an AS1950 movement . It was an heirloom from the customer's grandfather. For years, the watch had lain dormant in a drawer; the oil had dried out, and the movement was covered in dust and residue. So, it was time for a thorough overhaul—the kind of work that allows us, as watchmakers, to showcase our craftsmanship.

Complete disassembly of the AS1950 Edox Delfin internals

With a vintage watch like this, I always start by completely disassembling the internals . First, I open the case, then I remove the hands and dial to inspect each component individually. This Edox movement had caked on oil, which often happens with old mechanical watches that have been sitting idle and haven't been serviced for years. So, every cog, screw, and bearing is examined to detect any traces of rust or wear .

Cleaning and lubrication with fine oil

After the inspection, the entire movement goes into the cleaning machine . This removes all traces of old oil and dirt, so the components are clean again. Then, I begin reassembling the movement , lubricating each pivot point with fine watch oil . This is precision work down to the micron level; too much oil slows down the movement's operation, too little causes wear. It's precisely that balance that makes the difference between a functioning watch and a perfectly running movement.

Adjusting the vintage Edox Delfin watch

Once the movement is fully reassembled, I test it on our Witschi regulator . This allows me to measure the watch's running, whether it's running ahead or behind , its amplitude , and whether the lubrication is properly distributed. Based on these measurements, I adjust the movement until it performs optimally again. After a few fine-tunings, this Edox Delfin was once again running accurately within a few seconds per day , as a well-maintained mechanical watch should.
